Nebraska’s unicameral legislature is officially non-partisan, but pretty much everyone knows who sits on what side of the aisle. My State Senator is Republican John McCollister. He represents Nebraska LD 20, which includes much of south central Omaha. After the Parkland shooting I emailed him and asked him to support gun control. Much to my surprise, he emailed me back and agreed. When he came to my door during his 2018 reelection campaign, however, he sang a different tune. We needed to harden schools, we needed to do something about mental health. That’s why I was so shocked and delighted when I saw this tweet:
I have to wonder if his newfound courage, and make no mistake, this statement IS courageous coming form a Nebraska Republican, is bolstered by the fact that he is term limited out of the Legislature after this term. Regardless, this is a bold statement and I respect him for it. We need more Republicans willing to stand up to their party and speak the truth
Anyway, as of this writing the tweet has over 145 thousand likes, more than four times the number of people in his district. While I can’t see ever voting for him, it would be nice to see him challenge Don Bacon in the 2020 primary.
